I am not a New Zealand citizen. Can I work for your company in New Zealand?
You will require a current work visa or a work permit to be able to work for us. We will need to see evidence of this also.
Where will I be working?
We provide relieving staff to urban and rural early childhood education providers in the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Central North Island. For some rural based Centres travel allowances may be paid. Travel is paid when it is deemed more than is reasonable for work related travel from an urban base.
From time to time we provide relievers outside of these areas but only with express consent of the reliever. There would likely be extra costs if the reliever had to travel a significant distance. Provision of relievers in these circumstances is worked out and agreed on a case by case basis.
What will I be doing?
The role of a reliever in an Early Childcare Centre varies depending on the experience and qualifications of the reliever, and the philosophy, policies and procedures of the Centre. Duties can include supervision of children’s activities, preparation of food, cleaning and generally helping out within the Centre, and engaging with the children. Successful relievers need to be flexible to fit in with the requirements of each Centre.
When will I be working?
The more hours you are available the more work you can be offered.
It is very important that you keep us informed if your availability changes. You may for example be away for a few weeks, for a holiday for example. Or it may be unexpected and immediate such as illness. Contact us as soon as you know that you are not going to be available. You can text, phone or email us 24/7.
I have another part-time job every Wednesday. Is this a problem?
No. We would record your availability in our database as not available for work for us on Wednesdays.
My children are at school and I need to collect them at 3pm, and I can’t work in the school holidays. Will I still get work?
Yes. However, the pool of work we can assign to you is less. We do have some requests for short hour’s shifts and do our best to match these to staff that are not able to do early starts or late finishes.
How long will I be working?
Some Centres are open between 6:30am and 6:30pm Monday to Friday. Many shifts are six to eight hours; however, they can be shorter. Very occasionally shifts can be as long as nine or ten hours.
Shifts can be from one day only to an on-going assignment.
When will I know what hours I will be working?
We try to give you as much notice as possible. As you gain more experience you are likely to be requested by Centres. In which case you could be booked up to two weeks in advance, possibly more. Forward bookings are more common with qualified and registered teachers. Many calls however are short notice – often the morning of the day you are needed. Calls for same day work (often ASAP); sometimes continue up until late morning, occasionally into the early afternoon. We try to keep short notice to a minimum but it is inevitable that some work will be short notice. That is the nature of relieving.
If you haven’t had a call for work yet today and would still like to work, keep your mobile with you. As you never know when we may be calling you!
How much work is there?
The amount of work that is available depends on many things out of your and our control in the sector. But it is also very dependent on you!!! If you have a can do, will do attitude, are flexible, energetic, respectful of each Centres policies and work well alongside the Centre staff you will be requested by the Centres. The more requests you get the more work that you get offered. There is usually less work during December and January.
The other key factor that you control about how much work you get is keeping us informed of your availability. If we are confident we know your availability we can plan work for you with reasonable confidence that you will be available for it.
Will I get work every day?
As we are offering relieving work, we cannot guarantee hours, but we have many relievers who have been with us for several years, some more than ten years for whom we are their sole employer.
Why do we do what we do?
We provide this service for two reasons:
- To provide a service to the Early Childhood sector and to make it easy for Centres to fill those difficult moments. Our aim is to make a relief staff member only one phone call or text away.
- To make it easier for relievers to get more regular work.
